History:

The history of the firm begins in 1869. In that year W.G. Carter-Mitchell began practising as a solicitor in Bedford. On his retirement his practice was taken over by Mr. E. Taunton Williams, who was well known in the Bedford area, holding various public posts such as Clerk to the General Income Tax Commissioners.

Mr E.K. Martell formed the practice of Dixon Martell & Co in Kempston, Bedfordshire in 1934. In 1949 Dixon Martell & Co took over the Bedford practice of Carter Mitchell & Co.

The firm expanded to Northampton in 1971, practising from premises in Kingsley Park Terrace.  In 1972 Mr. E.K. Martell retired and the practice was renamed Borneo Martell & Partners. In 1982 the firm opened a new office in the centre of Northampton and now occupies a building that was formerly the science block of the Notre Dame Convent School. The building was extended in the late 1980s to accommodate more personnel.

In 1990, the firm separated from the Bedford office of Borneo Martell & Partners, to become the independent Northampton firm it is today.

In 1994 we were one of the first practices in Northamptonshire to pass the stringent quality tests necessary and to be awarded a Legal Aid Franchise. The firm was renamed borneohughesmartell in 2000.

On 1st July 2007, we became a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP).  Borneo Hughes Martell LLP will continue to trade under the name borneohughesmartell.
